{late} Happy Mother's Day!

....to the human moms ;). Since we live on a ranch, why not include a few pictures of the animal mamas for mother's day, too?

Mom + daughter.

A good sitter duck is so devoted. This one hatched out about 20 after the long approx. 36 days.

Kid Mania! Spring Kid Photos

Some photos of some of the kids - I like to take them out on a green field and shoot away. Yesterday was crazy - 3 ewes lambed to twins and 1 doe kidded to triplets, so 6 lambs and 3 kids! Oh, and 3 more lambs this morning, too (one of which was found dead).

Boer/Nubian buckling. We can really see his grandma in him
(who was one of our first goats, an old Nubian doe)
Sister to the buckling above.
Boer/Nubian buckling - cousin to the 2 above.
Meat cross - grandma is a black spanish (?).

First Bottle Baby of the Year!

Sorry ~ some of these posts are pretty outdated.

The other night at the livestock auction there were several bottle baby goats. The prices were really crazy, so we didn't buy any. But, after the auction was over somebody who had bought one of the kids gave it to us since their daughter didn't like it! Who would NOT take a free baby goat? Well, maybe you, but not us ;).

Plus, it's a little doeling! She's some kind of (spanish?) cross.

{3rd kidding} Interesting Birth

The third kidding of the year was a big, black meat cross doe. We were watching her go into labor, and all appeared fine at first. My sister wrote up a hole long deal about the wild birth, which you can see here.

The doe ended up having 3 live kids (1 doe, 2 bucklings) and a dead, undeveloped kid a day later.

*NOT FOR THE WEAK IN STOMACH*

Bubble!

She needs help . . .

Yikes! can we get it?

YES! YES, YES!?!?!

My sister's reaction: I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE'S OUT ALIVE! It's a girl.

And what is behind that placenta?

The doe: I WANT TO KILL YOU! She was not nice to us . . .

"NO!"

"Who are you?"

"My new play-mate?"

Gotta catch you again, mama.

And it is another kid . . .

It's a boy, and he's been wrapped around in the placenta ever since his sister was born several minutes ago. He was dazed.

A nice little family . . . until we discovered the fourth one . . .

which was dead,

a ugly mess of a undeveloped kid.

2nd kidding of the year!

This spotted black and white nubian doe (my Mom calls her star) gave birth to some red-headed babies (a buck and a doe). We don't know who the dad is, as she was already pregnant when we got her.

These babies are sure cuties!

It's A New Year! There's New Life . . .

New Year's day kids! We've been waiting for this boer doe to have kids ever since we got her, but she waited 'till the new year! I guess she just wanted to be the first doe of the year to kid ;).

I've also included some party pics ~

The balloons hanging from the rafter.

Homemade re-fried bean dip

Goodies galore!

Goat or Dog?

"Bear", one of our LGDs.

"Fighter"

Both are relaxing here, taking an afternoon nap.
